Meet The CEO
The Woman Behind The Mission
Dr. Mecca's health and wellness journey began over a decade ago while living a military lifestyle with her husband, who served in the United States Army. Unfortunately, he died in combat on a mission in Iraq on October 1, 2006. After this tragic loss, Dr. Mecca and her daughter had to support themselves and found new strength to navigate through trauma, grief, and the absence of her life partner. Shortly afterward, Dr. Mecca turned to martial arts training to cope with the unexpected loss of her husband, Sergeant Mario Nelson.
Dr. Mecca never imagined enduring such a loss would be possible. Drawing from her experiences in yoga, martial arts, and meditation, she soon realized the benefits of integrating these disciplines into her lifestyle. This led her to create a comprehensive model of wellness that incorporates the disciplines and resilience of martial arts alongside the practices of yoga, meditation, and massage therapy.
Inspired by these modalities, Dr. Mecca founded The YOMA Method, aiming to provide healing through yoga, the discipline of martial arts, and mindfulness meditation. Through The YOMA Method, students experience increased calmness, ease, and overall well-being. The program has expanded to include after-school and summer enrichment programs in NYC, where Dr. Mecca teaches children the YOMA Kids Mindfulness Experience practices.
